Why does dalai lama live in india

The Dalai Lama has been living in India ever since he fled Tibet in following a Chinese crackdown on an uprising by the local population. The Tibetan government-in-exile operates from Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh. Over 1,60, Tibetans live in India.

Sadly, the aspirations of His Holiness and the Tibetan people remain unfulfilled as the oppressive Chinese regime continues its disgraceful campaign of persecution, Pelosi said. She noted that the US Congress on a bipartisan basis has long spoken with one voice in defence of those persecuted by Beijing and will continue to do so.

In January, House Democrats defended the rights of Tibetans to practice their faith, speak their language and celebrate their culture free from Beijing's repressive grip by passing the Tibet Policy and Support Act, which makes clear the US position that interference by Beijing in the process of recognising a successor or reincarnation of the 14th Dalai Lama would represent a clear violation of the religious freedoms of the Tibetan people.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Tibet increasingly came under Chinese control, and in communist China invaded the country. After years of scattered protests, a full-scale revolt broke out in March , and the Dalai Lama was forced to flee as the uprising was crushed by Chinese troops. On March 31, , he began a permanent exile in India, settling at Dharamsala, where he established a democratically based shadow Tibetan government.

Back in Tibet, the Chinese adopted brutal repressive measures against the Tibetans, provoking charges from the Dalai Lama of genocide. With the beginning of the Cultural Revolution in China, the Chinese suppression of Tibetan Buddhism escalated, and practice of the religion was banned and thousands of monasteries were destroyed.

Although the ban was lifted in , protests in Tibet continued, and the exiled Dalai Lama won widespread international support for the Tibetan independence movement. In , he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in recognition of his nonviolent campaign to end the Chinese domination of Tibet. In a scathing assessment, he said the 45th president's time in office was defined by a "lack of moral principle", a contrast to remarks made in when he said he had "no worries" about a Trump presidency.

That is wrong," the Dalai Lama told me. The withdrawal from the Paris climate accord and the migrant crisis are two big areas of concern. The Dalai Lama is keen to separate his relationship with the president, or lack of one, with that of other American politicians.

He highlights the vice-president's support for the Tibetan people and the backing he has enjoyed from politicians in both houses of Congress. President Trump's apparent snub is reflective of the wider pressure Beijing is able to exert on those who engage with the Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama's world view is inherently global. When we discuss Brexit he tells me that he is "an admirer of the European Union" pointing out that global partnerships have been key in avoiding major conflicts. But the world's most famous refugee has some surprising views on immigration.

In a speech last year he said that refugees to the European Union should ultimately return home, adding that "Europe is for Europeans", a statement he stood by when I challenged him on it. The Dalai Lama believes the end game should be to rebuild the countries people have fled. But with some 70 million people displaced across the world according to the latest figures, what if people want to stay? A controversial viewpoint, and a reminder that while the Dalai Lama is a spiritual figurehead he is also a politician with views and opinions like everyone else.

Later in our conversation I also challenged him on another remark he made in , when he said if he was followed by a female Dalai Lama she would have to be attractive.
