Beethovens 5th how long
I came here to the Beethovenfest from Canada to experience more of his legendary pieces. I'm not such a big fan of the chamber music though. Music is very important to me, and Beethoven in particular because he was born here in Bonn. If I have a hard job ahead, I'll listen to the 'Eroica'. If I'm more relaxed and contemplative, it's the 'Pastoral'. I recently discovered his wonderful Triple Concerto - and have time to delve into his other works. The name Symphony of Fate persists, however.
In the Romantic era, artists believed in the power of fate. The Nazis liked the heroic and sublime nature of the music. After World War II, young composers shied away from such connotations and turned their backs on tradition and tonality. If they reverted to historic icons at all, they preferred Bach to Beethoven. Beginning in the s, conductor Herbert von Karajan recorded the Beethoven symphonies four times — the recording is in fact considered to be legendary.
Tastes change, and interpreting music as a soundscape like Karajan did has gone out of fashion. Today, researchers, performers and audiences are more interested in how the music would have sounded in Beethoven's day and age. From a purely emotional point of view, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony is inexorably linked to fate, which is how the work is marketed, not least at this year's Beethovenfest. Ultimately, every performer and every listener associates personal experiences with Beethoven's work — perhaps even their own fate.

And the symphony itself? It's one of the most recognized in music history. Conductor Christoph Eschenbach beams when he describes it, calling it "phenomenal. No successor in composition.
The first movement is one of the most modern ideas," he says. It comes again and again and again, this motif. Beethoven started his Fifth Symphony in , and he knew he was going deaf. He wrote it over nearly four years, when he also was busy on other compositions, including string quartets, concertos, and two other symphonies. Grappling with fate, he summoned defiance and triumph, with transcendent innovation. Eventually the maximum playing length was set at 74 minutes, 33 seconds, and in his grave Beethoven breathed a sigh of relief - modern consumers could now hear the whole Ninth Symphony in all its glory.
But there's a twist to this story. The real limit for CDs started at 72 minutes, not 74 minutes, since this was the maximum length of the U-Matic videotapes which were used for audio masters.
