How does baggage work on greyhound
Passengers are prohibited from transporting firearms, explosives, chemicals, combustible materials or hazardous materials on the bus or in checked luggage. One small bag is permitted on board the bus for each child and adult passenger. The bags must fit in either the overhead compartment or under the seat. Passengers can bring computers on board as a carry-on item, but they may not stow them in the luggage compartment.
Passengers should carry all money and prescription medications on board the bus. Lost or delayed bags will be delivered only to addresses within the continental United States; for other locations, passengers must make their own arrangements for delivery. Greyhound accepts no liability for carry-on luggage. Michele Norfleet is a freelance writer who writes on travel, home and garden and education topics.

Checked bags must weight 50 lbs. Unlike your carry-on, your checked bags will be weighed to make sure they are not overweight. If your bag is overweight, you might have to ship it to your destination via Greyhound Package Express. Overweight bags that weigh between lbs. Checked bags cannot exceed a total of 62 inches when you add together the length, width, and height. Basically, any bag the size of a large suitcase is fine. Anything bigger and you might run into some issues.
I have never seen anyone break out a tape measure or ruler while loading checked bags, however, so I feel that as long as your checked bag isn't obviously too big you should be ok. A standard-sized carry on bag will fit in the overhead bins just fine. Greyhound accepts no responsibility for carry-on bags, so there is no compensation should something happen to yours during your trip.
This is why I advise travelers to keep their carry-on bags with them at all times. If you would like to purchase additional insurance on your checked bag, there are several different levels of coverage. Each level has a different premium associated with it.
See the chart below for the exact insurance coverage levels as well as the corresponding fees. At most Greyhound bus stations, you are responsible for your own luggage during transfers and layovers. You will take your carry-on bags with you as you exit the bus and then wait to get your checked bags from underneath the bus. Once you claim your checked bag, it is your responsibility until you board the next bus.
Some stations offer lockers or temporary baggage storage that can be rented for a small fee. These are a good option if you have a long layover and are planning to leave the station and explore the surrounding area. Keep in mind that Greyhound only offers compensation for checked bags that are lost or damaged while stored underneath the bus, so any insurance you purchase will not cover your bags while you are transferring buses or inside the station.
This is another reason to keep your bags with you at all times. You are responsible for claiming your luggage when you are finished traveling and during layovers. As was mentioned earlier, Greyhound accepts no responsibility for your carry-on bags—if they are damaged or lost, you will not be compensated. I would still report any lost bags to a Greyhound employee or even to the police, especially if you believe they were stolen. The chances of you ever getting your luggage back are slim to none, but it doesn't hurt to file a police report.
